Sierra Negra Volcanco on Isla Isabela in the Galapagos Islands continued erupting on October 27, 2005. By the time the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the Aqua satellite captured this image, the eruption had produced a large amount of vog. Nature’s version of smog, vog results from the mixing of volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide, oxygen, water, aerosols, and sunlight. In this image, the vog has moved westward from the islands over the Pacific...

[image]Dust Devil Schematic - NASA
This graphic illustrates the wind pattern in a dust devil, and presents the characteristic pressure and wind speed signatures expected if a dust devil were to pass directly over the lander. A dust devil is driven by warm air rising from the surface which is heated by the sun. If one passes over the lander, strong winds are expected first from one direction and then from the opposite direction. Surface pressure should also fall to a minimum at the center of the dust devil.

The fires have been burning on Sumatra off and on for nearly two months, filling the skies with smoke that has interfered with air travel and led to numerous unhealthy-air-quality warnings. It might seem strange to think of a swampy f...

[image]Chandra X-ray Spectrum of II Pegasi
Chandra was used to measure the neon abundance in 21 Sun-like stars within a distance of 400 light years. The spectrum of one of these objects, II Pegasi, is shown above. The relative amount of neon in these stars was, on average, almost three times more neon than is measured for the Sun, just the amount needed to bring the solar oscillation observations and the theoretical model into agreement. II Pegasi was observed by Chandra on October 17, 1999 for 12 hours...

The X-ray spectrum of TW Hydrae (left) provides strong evidence that matter is accreting onto the star from a circumstellar disk. X-rays are produced as matter from the disk is guided by the star's magnetic field onto one or more hot spots on the surface of the star. In contrast, the spectrum of the binary star system HD 98800A (right) revealed that its brightest star is producing X-rays much as the Sun does, from a hot upper atmosphere or corona...
